Shawn McCormick, Non-Executive Chairman
Shawn McCormick is the Managing Director of a London-based boutique strategic consulting firm focused on mining and oil & gas sectors in Africa and Latin America. He is the Non-Executive Chairman of Piran Resources (Rwanda/tin and tantalum), Shawn is also the Non-Executive Director of LSE-listed Rainbow Rare Earths (Burundi), Non-Executive Director of ASX-listed Tiger Resources (DRC/copper and cobalt), and Executive Director of Karo Resources (Zimbabwe/PGMs). His previous roles include Corporate Vice President for International Affairs at TNK-BP in Moscow and Senior Global Affairs Advisor and Africa regional advisor for BP in London. He also served as Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council in The White House in Washington.
Adonis Pouroulis, Non-Executive Deputy Chairman
Adonis is an entrepreneur whose expertise lies in the discovery, exploration and development of mineral resources including diamonds, precious / base metals, coal and oil and gas, and bringing these assets into production. Having worked in the natural resources sector for over 18 years he has extensive experience in the exploration and mining sector, and a wide network of industry relationships across the African continent.
Adonis qualified as a mining engineer from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1991 and subsequently spent some time working in the South African gold mines before heading to the Former Soviet Union where he established the Koronia metal trading company in Moscow. In 1994, having returned to South Africa, Adonis founded Blue Diamond Mines that developed a diamond mining operation in Port Nolloth and brought it into full production. Seeing an opportunity to create a larger, international diamond company focused in Africa, he founded Petra Diamonds and in 1997 it became the first diamond company to be listed on London’s AIM market with a market capitalisation at the time of just £10 million. He has since overseen Petra’s development from an exploration base into one of the largest independent diamond producers in Africa today with a market capitalisation of over £1billion. Petra stepped up from AIM to the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange in December 2011 and entered the FTSE 250 Index in March 2012.
He has been influential in the founding, development, fund raising and listing of a number of natural resources companies and is the founder of Pella Resources Limited, an African focused natural resource and energy group. Pella has created a strong track record in exploration and mine development across the continent, with the goal to generate early stage private companies and develop them into individual private / public companies. Examples of companies that form part of the Pella Resources Group are Toro Gold, Alufer Mining, Rainbow Rare Earths (listed on London Stock Exchange in January 2017, a Rare Earths project in commission stage in Burundi) and Piran Resources (a tin and tantalum project in Rwanda).
James Beams, Chief Executive Officer
James is a highly experienced mining professional with over 25 years’ in the mining industry. He has held senior executive positions in public and private companies and brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding both within the mining sector and the investor markets.
Previously CEO of Aim listed company North River Resources and remains on the Board as a Non Executive Chairman. Prior to North River James spent 14 years with Anglo American plc. For his final five years at Anglo American he was the Chief Financial Officer for the Copper division, and prior to that served in several senior management positions within the company. Prior to his time at Anglo American, he held senior finance roles at Minorco and Commercial Union.
Matt Norman, Non-Executive Director
Matthew is the Chief Investment Officer of a Single Family Office overseeing a global portfolio of direct and fund investments. Matthew sits on numerous other boards, including acting as a trustee of The Vincent Wildlife Trust charity. Matthew holds an MA in International Conflict Analysis.
Alexander Lowrie, Non-Executive Director
Alex is the co-founder of Telemark Capital LLP, a partnership focusing on capital advisory and asset management. Through its consulting subsidiary, Gunnerside Advisors, Alex is also involved in providing governance services as an independent investment committee member to a variety of advisory panels. Prior to this Alex worked for 13 years in investment banking. He was a director at Deutsche Bank and then RBS from 2004 to 2012, having started his banking career in 1998 at ABN AMRO. Through these positions, he has gained extensive market experience in primary and secondary equity offerings including bringing companies to market through IPOs (including structuring, marketing and distribution). Alex graduated from Durham University with a BA (hons) in Combined Social Sciences.
Tim Gazzard, Non-Executive Director
Tim Gazzard, (MBA, Grad Dip App Fin, BEng (Hons, Mining), serves as Global Head of Specialty Ores & Metals for Kalon Resources, a subsidiary of Noble Group. Mr. Gazzard joined Noble in 2009 and has served globally as Global Head of Iron Ore, Special Ores & Industrial Metals, Global Head of Metallurgical Coal, Head of Indonesian Coal and SVP Asset Development. Prior to that he worked with Barclays Capital in their Metals & Mining Investment Banking team and Thiess as a Mining Engineer in Australia, Indonesia and Peru. He has almost 20 years experience in a variety of commodities across all aspects of the supply chain including mining, asset development, logistics, sales & marketing, financing and M&A. Mr. Gazzard graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor in Mining Engineering (Hons) and holds a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and an MBA (Distinction) from London Business School.
